Welcome to the Waller County Extension Office
Welcome to Waller County Cooperative Extension where we strive for "real learning for real life." Waller County lies proudly along the Brazos River in the southern part of its valley. It was named in honor of Edwin Waller. The county was established in 1873, and its county seat is Hempstead. Hempstead, known as "Six Shooter Junction" during the turbulent years after the Civil War, is still the economic center due to the intersection of Business 290 and Texas 6. Currently it hosts the annual festival for the renowned locally grown watermelons. The city of Waller is on Texas Highway 290 with half of the city being located in Harris County. Brookshire, centered along Interstate 10 in the south, is the host to the county's historical museum. Waller County boasts of fertile farms and expansive ranches along with industrial machinery and equipment, manufacturing, and the automobile sales industry which makes significant contributions to the Waller County economy. Waller County is home to Prairie View A&M University. Three Independent School Districts of Hempstead, Royal, and Waller provide education to the youth of the county. Liendo Plantation tours and events provide historical information about the area.
